Fire Safety on Loon Call Lake

Loon Call Lake has two fire pumps, available to Loon Callers by reaching out to the Fire Safety Volunteers, or if you are able, you may retrieve them. The objective of the Fire Pumps and the Fire Safety Volunteers is to augment your efforts to reduce the spread of fire. They are not an alterative to calling 911.

Smoke and CO Alarms

In Ontario it is the law to have working smoke alarms outside of sleeping areas on every level of all residential buildings, including cottages. In 2014 it became law that Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms also be installed in homes on every level where there is sleeping. A CO alarm is required if your cottage has a furnace, gas water heater, wood stove, gas fireplace, attached garage or any other fuel burning appliances. Test smoke/CO alarms monthly, change batteries every 6 months and replace alarms with new ones every 10 years or as per manufacturer’s instructions.

Fire Safety Checklist/tips

☐ Develop and practice a cottage fire escape plan.
☐ Test smoke and CO alarms monthly.
☐ Check heating appliances and chimneys before using them.  Ensure built up creosote in chimney is cleaned.
☐ Campfires should be built on bare soil, exposed rock or in a steel fire pit. Remove leaves and twigs from around the fire to keep it from spreading. Keep a bucket of water, sand, or a fire extinguisher close by. Supervise the fire.
☐ Burn candles in sturdy candleholders that will not tip. When you go outside, blow them out.
☐ If you smoke, do so outside. Keep a large can with water or sand nearby so cigarette butts can be safely discarded.
☐ Clean barbecues before using them. Keep an eye on lit barbecues and ensure all combustibles, as well as children and pets, are kept away from them.
☐ Have a 5lb ABC fire extinguisher in the cottage and boat.
☐ Use mouse traps to prevent chewing on electrical wiring.  Do not use extension cords as permanent wiring.
☐ Do not store propane tanks or gas cans indoors.
☐ Allow for proper clearance of combustibles around furnaces, baseboard heaters and wood stoves.
☐ If you have an oil fire do not throw water on it.  Shut off the burner and place a lid on the pot.  A fire extinguisher, fire blanket, or baking soda can also be effective in extinguishment.
☐ If your wood stove is not WETT certified it may be a good idea to have it inspected/replaced.
