Loon Call Lake Cottagers’ Association Newsletter – Spring 2026

A Message from Your LCLCA  President

Spring is here!  It seemed slow to arrive this year, but at least when it got here, it didn’t require everyone to dust off their chain saws.

And the lake is back.  The very low water levels caused by last summer’s drought have risen, thanks to the melt from a significant winter snow pack.  Loon Call Lake has returned to full strength, and is ready for a summer of fun.

While on your way to that fun, why not stop by the North Kawartha Community Centre and meet a bunch of your fellow cottagers?  The Loon Call Lake Cottagers’ Association  (LCLCA) Annual General Meeting begins at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 13th.  Come and hear Tyler Speck, the Park Superintendent, bring us up to date on the Park that surrounds us.  Ask  a question of our Mayor, Carolyn Amyotte, in this, a municipal election year.  Hear about the health of our lake from our Lake Steward, Marc Possmayer, and about all the fun events that await you this summer courtesy of your LCLCA Executive.  Or, better still, grab a coffee and a doughnut, and chat with your lake neighbours.  A new lake friendship may be waiting for you.

Happy spring 2026 everyone.  Let’s get out there and enjoy all of the wonders that Loon Call Lake has to offer.

I can’t wait to see you on the lake.

Ian Godfrey
President, Loon Call Lake Cottagers’ Association

Governance

Executive Opening

Vice President:

All good things come to an end. After many years serving on the executive, Henry Decock is pulling up his oar, so to speak.  Most notable among Henry’s many contributions is his spearheading of the Fire Pump Committee.  The work of that committee will benefit all of us, for years to come.

Thank you Henry, for all of your work with the Loon Call Lake Cottagers’ Association.  You’ve helped make the lake a better place for all of us.

On the up side, this provides an opening for YOU!  Are you interested in contributing to the Loon Call Lake Executive? Reach out to Ian to find out how you can make a difference. The role is quite dynamic, make it what you want it to be… the only firm requirements are to attend and contribute to the meetings of the executive, and to step in, should the President be unavailable.

Community News

Lake Partner Program

Community engagement works.  Due, in great part, we like to believe, to the cottager response to the cancellation of the Lake Partner Program (LPP), the program was given a five-year extension! This means that we have another five years of consistently measured water quality reporting and action.

KLSA – Kawartha Lake Stewards Association

Would you like to find out more about the regional lakes and lake programs?

This message from the KLSA…

The KLSA Annual Spring Meeting is fast approaching, and we hope you’ll join us on May 23, 2026!

We’ll be gathering at the Buckhorn Community Centre, 1782 Lakehurst Rd., Buckhorn, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

KLSA will provide updates on our ongoing programs, and once again this year we’re welcoming guests from several environmental organizations to share the important work they’re doing to help protect the health of our lakes and surrounding environment. You’ll have an opportunity to visit their exhibits and chat with representatives. Kawartha Conservation will also be on site selling native plants to help enhance your shoreline.

We’re also excited to feature a terrific guest speaker: Warren Dunlop — retired Senior Aquatic Ecologist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, President of the North Pigeon Lake Association (NPLA), and avid ornithologist — who will present: “Observing the ‘Wings’ of Change: Bird Populations in the Kawarthas.” After Warren’s engaging presentation, you may feel inspired to stop by the Peterborough County Stewardship Council exhibit to pick up a nesting box of your own!

Attendees will also be able to pick up a copy of our special 25th Anniversary Edition Lake Water Quality Report, Looking Back, Moving Forward: 25 Years of Kawartha Lakes Stewardship. For E. coli program volunteers, water sampling kits will be available as well.

If you have any questions, please contact us at klsa@klsa.info.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Creekside Music Festival

This message is from the organizers of the Creekside Festival….

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of the Creekside Music Festival for September 2026.

Due to unforeseen insurance challenges, we are unable to operate at our current location this year. This news came to us only recently, and despite our best efforts, we have not been able to secure a suitable alternative venue.

Creekside’s mission—to bring people together along Eels Creek for unforgettable music while giving back to our community—grew beyond anything we could have imagined. Its success has always been thanks to all of YOU, along with the incredible support of our sponsors, performers, and volunteers. We are truly grateful for the role each of you has played in making Creekside so meaningful.

Should we find a way to bring Creekside back in the future, you will be the first to hear. This is a very difficult goodbye for all of us and we hope we will gather with you again one day. Until then, may music continue to soothe your soul.

Thank you again for your continued support,
Sandy Del Mastro, Coordinator
Mike Del Mastro, Coordinator
Alicia Scriver, Coordinator

Historical Record

Around the Moon in Ten Days

We like to think that these newsletters will form a historical record of the events around the world at the time of writing.

A truly remarkable event that touched Apsley, took place in 2026  and that is the trip around the moon by Artemis. This was the first trip to the moon since Apollo 17 December 1972 (many of us old folks were just children then). Artemis included a Canadian Astronaut, Jeremy Hansen, from London Ontario. The trip took the astronauts further from earth than any humans had ever been.

What makes this even more special to us here on Loon Call Lake is, that while in space the astronauts responded to a question from Parker from APSLEY! Parker (seen at about 19:32 on the YouTube video)  asks Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen to answer his question, “Why does water become spherical is space?”  Thanks to the Bancroft Scouts group Commissioner, Loretta Kasperski, for submitting his question and making this happen.  To see the video of the question, https://www.facebook.com/share/v/18cAG3imJg
